This short film implements various codes and conventions of the drama genre, in order to exemplify a tense atmosphere, thus immersing the audience into the experience. The film’s evident theme is the death of a loved one, which is denoted through the 4 technical aspects incorporated within the plot. Throughout the narrative, a man is exemplified to be reminiscing on the time he spent with his son, however there is an enigma thread, because it is not apparent how his son passed. This exemplifies Barthes enigma code, and leaves the audience questioning how the son died, therefore evoking an ambiguity to the plot. The poignant motifs of death and depression create a “bleak natured’ environment, thus allowing the audience to realise the overall mood of the scene. [1] The short film, ‘Alone’, epitomizes the main protagonist to be in a state of isolation and sadness, depicting him as lonely, therefore allowing him to be a character that the audience can relate to. The protagonist losing his son is a convention of a drama, because it distinguishes a clear journey the character has gone through; this shapes his current persona. The short film begins with a shot of two hands gripping onto an umbrella. The umbrella connotes bad weather, which further symbolises a negative atmosphere due to rain being associated with sadness. This exemplifies to the audience that the protagonist is going through depressive emotions and isn’t in the best circumstances. The two hands are seen to be tightly gripping to the umbrella denoting desperation and exemplifying to the audience that the character is in a state of unease. The camera then shifts upwards so we can see the back of an individuals had. This further aids Barthes enigma code, because we are unaware as to who this man is and what his intentions are. At the start of the film, the lighting epitomizes a white form of lighting which is mildly high key. The white colouring produces connotations of purity, symbolising the innocence of the child that has passed. The term, ‘white light’, also refers to the concept of death, demonstrating the son being in a better place. Non-diegetic music can be heard of a soft piano instrumental which is synchronous to the scene. The music creates a depressive and melancholy atmosphere, emphasising the fact that the protagonist isn’t expressing any form of happiness. The protagonist is also wearing a black suit which is attire for a funeral, demonstrating to the audience what is going on within the scene. The man is then shot at the side of the frame, with grave stones taking up the main area of the shot, symbolising his unimportance and the idea that he is surrounded by death.
The depth of field shot is used frequently within the piece to reiterate the reoccurring motif of loss and faded memories. The camera isn’t in focus to connote the shifts between the protagonists past and his isolated present. Throughout the film’s progression, the camera is constantly moving, rather than exemplifying stationary shots. This could connote the father’s restlessness when thing about his son and how his agitation internally is affecting him externally. As well as this, when the man enters his house, there are no cuts in the action, symbolising he idea that this means pain is forever lasting. Throughout the film, flashbacks occur and high key lighting is distinguished, juxtaposed to the present-day shots. This high key lighting produces connotations of happiness, exemplifying to the audience a tone when the protagonist was most happy (with his son) vs his darkest times without his son. Within the flashbacks, the mise en scene is used depicting the protagonist and his son to be wearing bright colours, for example oranges and reds, therefore connoting contentment. This parallel reinstates the journey the protagonist has gone through from having everything he ever wanted to nothing. Throughout the flashbacks, the camera keeps transitioning from out of focus to in focus. This could symbolise the father trying to forget about his son, in order to move on but his memory being too strong. A prime convention of a drama is for the audience to go on an emotional journey with the protagonist, therefore the audience will be able to empathise with the protagonist due to the death of his son taking an immense toll on his physically and emotionally. On top of this when one of the flashback ends, the non-diegetic sound of the football becomes diegetic exemplifying the father to be in a hallucinating state. He his scene in a long shot reacting to the diegetic sound, exemplifying his son’s death causing him to hallucinate. After he hears this sound he runs downstairs and picks up the ball we see in the flashbacks. A low angle shot is presented, connoting the protagonist’s dominance. This puts the audience in a position as if they are looking up at the father from the child’s point of view, further epitomizing the idea that the presence of the child will always be with the father.

The final scene demonstrates the father walking away from the graveyard. He is at the centre of the frame, which is followed by a loose frame being presented to connote his isolation, and the fact that he is alone without is son. Throughout the film, there is an enigma thread as to who the man is grieving over, because although we assume it is his child due to the flashbacks, it is not confirmed. At the end of the film, the shot pans to a picture of his son with a flower next to it confirming he is the one who the man is grieving over.

Identity conveyed the codes and conventions of the drama genre throughout. The film explores the identities of those hiding behind a ‘mask’ solely because they are either judged by the media or by everyone else. In the narrative we explore a student’s journey around the school seeing the types of people that are presented, most are presented differently from everyone else. For example, a poster is shown on “what beautiful looks like” this follows the codes and conventions of a drama genre as some believe that they are outcasted from everyone else, and if they are not beautiful they are not paid much attention to such as the main character. The media has created an image for how to look and how to act, the main character was left alone throughout the short film, this maybe because she may look different and act different from everyone else as we see at the start she is bullied for this.

As the short film continues the main character has a class and the teacher starts to discuss about ‘Plato’s Allegory of the cave’, I started to research about this theory and is said that humans live in caves throughout their life and are trapped with a dark wall in front of them but when they are released from the caves it is their job to come and free those who are still trapped. The girl pays little attention to this and resents the idea that they must free those who are still trapped, this may be because she feels that they may not listen or do not deserve it.

Moreover, the following scene shows her sitting on a table alone, she noticed that everyone is sat in groups and wearing same coloured masks, this may suggest that these individuals are similar to each other or dependent on other individuals. This is contrasted to the girl’s mask as it looks different from everyone else, this may suggest she is independent and unique to other individuals which is why she is an outcast to society. We then find her in the same position as in the beginning, but we see a broken mask of her which may indicate that her true identity may follow through and will be “released from the caves”. Though the camera decides to shake which may indicate that she may be unconfident or not ready for this change.

Finally, the girl then takes off her mask revealing her face as she smiles through her reflection. She felt a certain relief after taking the mask off which followed through with a voiceover “Today the truth found me” suggesting that the mask was untruthful and lie. The girl walks out where everyone wearing a mask is looking at her confused. The audience may see her act as bravery and heroic as she takes the decision to be her ‘true self’ rather than a lie.

One short film that I have decided to focus on was ‘Time Runs Out’ by Johannes Weber. I decided to analysis this short film because I felt that this film included many codes and conventions of the genre, drama. It conveyed the sadistic music and use of dark, sombre colours to represent the emotions of the 2 characters and significant use of close ups to evoke the characters emotions. I was also drawn to this short film because; I felt it linked heavily to our storyline and synopsis within our own production. It entails a heart-throbbing storyline and the significant emphasis upon time. The film presents the sadistic and negative stigma of time and the effects of regret.

After a heated argument between 2 people, the female storms out of the house in frustration to leave and rapidly gets into her car. However, this unfortunately ends in a fatal car collision and the death of the female character. The film entails a significant amount of extreme close ups of the hour glass, whereby the audience grasp an understanding of the importance of this theme and the role it plays within the film.

The film opens with a close-up of a male character, which we could identify as the main character (protagonist). Through his facial expressions (mise-en-scene) we could understand that he is unsettled, distraught and reflecting upon previous events that may have negatively impacted him. The use of a grey effect throughout the short film may portray the subtle mood set through the film to convey the sombre and morbid tone to the outcomes of the film. It also creates a suspenseful tone upon the film for the audience to sense a certain climax to occur. The colour grey continuously connotes themes of; anger, loss, regret, sadness and remorse. Throughout the film, a close up of a glass timer is continuously used throughout, this may connote ideas of time playing a significant role within the film and also time being lost or taken for granted. The use of the timer may also represent the lack of time he has or has lost. This may also show his regret and want to turn back time. The use of continuous flashbacks and quick cuts to close ups of the male’s dull facial expressions, creates an emphasis upon his emotions and the hurt of losing his lover or best friend.

Furthermore, the use of medium close ups and medium shots placed an emphasis upon the idea of a confrontation between both the female and male main characters. Both medium close-ups convey both their body language and facial expressions. The use of close ups upon the characters faces, conveyed the emotions of anger and frustration, setting the tone for the audience for the previous close ups of the male characters morbid facial expressions. Both characters are at the centre of the frame, which exemplifies their significance within the short film and one another’s lives. Throughout these scenes, the use of ‘depth of field’ is used to highlight the significance of the characters and their role within the scene. It also sheds a light upon the characters emotions within the shot.

Throughout the short film, the use of synchronous sounds and music is used to aid the visuals and connote certain emotions from the characters within each shot. They also highlight the tension between both characters and help convey the message of regret and sorrow. This is demonstrated, within one scene whereby the use of synchronous music creates an emphasis on the female character leaving the house, with a close up shot following after, presenting the male’s morbid emotions.
When focusing on how it incorporates the codes and conventions of a film within the genre of drama, it is understood that the film incorporates various different aspects that make it clear of what genre is it for the audience. When applying Steven Neale’s genre theory to this short film, it is understood that a film must conform and follow the stereotypical elements of a genre to still be viewed as a film from the genre. Even though this film doesn’t follow every aspect or conform to the genre, drama, it however does convey attributes of this genre and doesn’t qualify as another genre. The aspects used to aid the representation of the drama genre are; extreme/medium close ups, sadistic synchronous music, and also shows a journey/development of a character. All these elements aid audiences distinguish the differences between different genres and understand the stereotypical/generic emotions and storyline’s that would be presented within a film.
