Our main task is to shoot and edit a 5 minute short film, exemplifying a genre of our choice. In order to encapsulate the audience’s attention, our 5 minute film must include a twist, changing the tone and mood of the atmosphere. This is a crucial factor of the assignment, because it allows the audience to become immersed into the experience, as well as creating a shock factor to their experience. On top of this, our short film must have a clear three part structure (beginning, middle and end), in order to make it easier for the audience to follow the story line.

The poster must exemplify the genre of our film for the audience’s awareness. Including images of the protagonists and antagonists is also a good way of giving the audience an insight on the representations we will be implementing, and whether they can connect with these characters on a relatable level. As well as this, our use of colour is a fundamental aspect, because it will let us symbolize the genre type. Due to the fact our genre is a drama, we would use darker colours which connote ambiguity, further foreshadowing future events of the film, without giving too much away (iconography).

The analysis should exemplify the clear codes and conventions of my chosen genre, whilst demonstrating how the four technical aspects (Sound, Editing, Mise en Scene and cinematography) create a certain mood and atmosphere, aiding the audiences immersion.

The evaluation should be an in depth overview of our filming experience, criticizing the finished product, and the process overall. It should clearly include whether we met our set aims and to what standard we did so. We must also suggest how the production could have been improved and how we would do so. The evaluation is crucial in constructively criticizing our finished product, allowing us to develop an understanding on how we could be even more successful in the future.
