'                                                             Future Shorts’ is a global platform for short content since 2004.                                                                      The company allow a wide range of sort content to be globally                                                                          shown and acts as a form of marketing t get the news of many films                                                                spread through word of mouth. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In terms of our production, future shorts is not only our distributor within the process, but also acted as an influencer of our actual narrative. In order to understand the codes and conventions of a short film, we watched various future shorts films, in order to understand how to exemplify a  clear, strong narrative in a mere five minutes. From watching some of the films, we could see the plot consisted of three main areas:

 

-Instigation of discussion

-Development of said discussion

-Plot twist ending

 

These three areas worked hand in hand to create such effective films. An example of a film where these building blocks were used effectively is, ‘The Black hole’. The story began with a man finding a plain sheet of paper with a black circle drawn on it. The man is dressed in simple everyday clothing which complement the lighting and visual aesthetic which exemplifies a cold basic atmosphere. This portrays to the audience that the atmosphere is mundane and calm. This is an effective technique because it sets the scene in the norm; the audience will be shocked at what happens next.

 

The scene then progresses into the central protagonists realisation that the hole is a portal. He begins using the powers the hole provides to his advantage. The development of his findings is him benfitting form the information he has just collated

 

The final stage is where the man’s greed becomes the best of him. He finds a safe which is holding a lot of money and decides to use the whole to steal the money. Overcome by excitement he climbs into the hole to collect more money at which point the sheet of paper has fallen and he is trapped in the safe. At this moment the plot twist is the irony of him using the hole to his advantage only to e in a far worse circumstance than before.We therefore used future shorts’ three building blocks to create our own plot.

 

Our story begins with the topic of discussion Olivia brings up, family hood. Kyle becomes agitated on the subject, therefore the audience get the impression this isn’t the first tie the subject has been mentioned. From this the audience can see two paradoxing views on the matter. On one hand, Olivia urges Kyle for a family due to the fact she thinks they are mature and the right age for it. Paradoxically, Kyle wants to stay young and believes they are not ready.

 

The development of the discussion is when Olivia leaves because she wants a life that Kyle doesn’t. She is pregnant and therefore leaves Kyle with a choice, either meeting her at Liverpool street station so they can start their lives together or accepting the fact that they were never meant to be. Coming to the realisation that he needs Olivia, Kyle backs his bags and sets off to win her back.

 

The major plot twist at the end is Olivia getting caught in the London Bombings and dying due to her bus exploding outside Liverpool street station. The irony of the matter is the fact that the audience thinks the plot twist is the pregnancy, making the bombing more hard hitting.
